This is my own little forum to have my say and explain a few things about the site, so I'll answer
my anticipated critics and hope that the site becomes a little clearer!
You will notice that the site is fairly simple in appearance, this is deliberate; there is nothing I like to see
more than a well designed artisticly impressive site, however, whilst I can sometimes take a nice
photograph, I am no
artist. I don't intend to enter the ranks of the many websites out here which are unforgiving on the eye and
embarrassing at work due to sudden outbursts of background music.
Rant over!
Instead, I have spent my time trying to ensure that;
For anybody who has bothered to read this far, you must still be interested! I used to hunt around for different HTML
editors, always hoping to find a better one. I have, my search is over. This site is written entirely using Notepad
and making frequent reference to many sources derived from Google. Notepad is free, uncluttered and because it doesn't
really understand what you are typing it means that you, the typist, have to. That way, not only do you get to learn
how HTML works, but you can make a point of stripping out all of the detritus that generally gets included without your
knowledge or permission.
If you want something a little friendlier than Notepad you could try Mozilla. http://www.mozilla.org/
It is actually a web browser, from what I have seen so far a much better one than IEx, it sticks to the HTML rules
correctly and includes a whole bunch of features to get rid of popups etc. And, to top it all, it has a WYSIWYG page
editor. Oh, did I mention that it is free?. I run it in conjunction with IE6, some commercial sites fail to display on Mozilla
they tell me to upgrade to IE5+ because they appear to have been written to take advantage of loopholes in the way various
browsers function.
Ever noticed that I don't put my email address on the guestbook? I did at first and boy did it get spammed.
Now I use a bit of Java code to hide the address from scavenging software which trawls for addresses. There is a link
here which goes to an anti spam page, it's a kind of way of fighting back.
How about taking the Boulder Pledge? Click here to see a reproduction of the 1996 article. We all need to do our bit.
Finally, on the technical side, I run Apache webserver on my pc so that I can test all of the pages locally before I
upload them, I have a broadband connection and can submit them to the HTML checking engines directly from my own
machine and edit any mistakes out before making them live.
I welcome feedback, good or bad, so long as it is considered opinion - telling me that the site is crap is not really
much help is it?
If you don't like it, tell me why. If you do like it tell me why as well so that I can try to make it better.
Thanks for listening, you've made a young tog
feel wanted!
